MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College men's basketball team celebrated Sophomore Night on Thursday, recognizing the contributions of eight veteran players in their final home game of the season. Despite a hard-fought battle, the Eagles fell to Copiah-Lincoln Community College, 80-67, in a competitive matchup at the Graham Gymnasium.
The Eagles (10-18, 3-10 MACCC) started the night trailing early as Co-Lin (11-14, 3-10 MACCC) jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the 15:17 mark in the first half. MCC continued to battle, eventually taking the lead, 28-27, with just over three minutes remaining before halftime. Key three-pointers from Michael James and Tre Taylor helped keep the game tight, and after a foul and a technical on Co-Lin's bench, MCC secured a 38-37 advantage heading into the break.
The second half opened with a cold stretch for the Eagles, who were held scoreless for the first four minutes, allowing Co-Lin to regain the lead. The Wolves started the half on a 7-0 run, but MCC clawed their way back once again. After a technical foul on Co-Lin, the Eagles edged ahead 49-47 in a game that saw both teams plagued by foul trouble.
With nine minutes left, the teams were deadlocked at 56, and again at 63 with just over four minutes remaining. However, Co-Lin closed the game strong, outscoring MCC 17-4 in the final stretch to secure the victory.
Michael James led the Eagles with 16 points, while Chance Sutton added 15 in the effort.
MCC will close out the regular season on the road as they take on East Mississippi in Scooba on Monday, March 3.
