MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's soccer team stayed hot Tuesday night, earning its third consecutive conference win with a 3-2 victory over Itawamba at C.D. Smith Field.
The Lady Eagles entered the match 4-6-2 overall and 2-5 in MACCC play, riding the momentum of two straight conference wins. Itawamba, coming in at 5-4-3 and 3-2-2 in league play, battled evenly with Meridian in a fast-paced matchup from start to finish.
Freshman Mira Storm opened the scoring for the Lady Eagles in the 25th minute, finding the back of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. The Indians responded in the 34th minute to even the score at 1-1, but Meridian regained control just before halftime when freshman Flo Rigby capitalized on an opportunity to put the Lady Eagles ahead 2-1 heading into the break.
The second half featured long stretches of back-and-forth play before Rigby struck again in the 80th minute, extending Meridian's lead to 3-1. The goal marked her ninth of the season, tying Storm for the team lead.
Itawamba made a late push and scored with just two minutes remaining, but the Lady Eagles held strong defensively to secure the 3-2 win.
Head Coach Mike Smith praised his team's consistency and growth during the recent stretch.
"Our players are really starting to find their rhythm," Smith said. "We've worked hard to put things together, and to see this group win three in a row in conference play is a great sign of where we're headed."
The Lady Eagles (5-6-2, 3-5 MACCC) will look to continue their winning streak next Tuesday when they travel to Summit to face Southwest Mississippi at 5 p.m.
