MERIDIAN - Diego Leslie wins the District D Tournament to help propel the Eagles into the National Tournament in Plymouth, Indiana.
Following a disappointing MACCC State tournament, the Eagles knew they needed a good showing in the District D Tournament at Reunion Golf Club in Madison, MS. The Eagles came out firing on day one, trailing MS Gulf Coast by 1 stroke after 18 holes. Head coach Ronnie Key said, "We fought through a tough course and were able to have success."
Diego Leslie and Ethan Dyess led the Eagles with a low tournament score of 150. Leslie would win medalist after a 3 man playoff with Dyess and MGCCC's Chase Wilkinson. Coach Key said, "I'm proud of Diego and Ethan for finishing tied for first and for Diego winning on the first hole of the playoff." Key added, "Having both of these two back next season will be a great foundation to build on."
The Eagles placed 2nd in the five-team tournament, seven strokes behind MGCCC, but good enough to qualify for the national tournament.
The National Tournament is at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana, May 18-21, 2021.
Coach Key said, " I'm so proud of this team qualifying for the national tournament. We have a very competitive district, and only two teams can qualify, so that is a great achievement." Key added, "We have played Swan Lake before, and it is a fantastic layout, and I think we will play well there."
