MERIDIAN - Meridian Community College is proud to announce the addition of a new sport to its athletic program, swimming. With this addition, MCC becomes the only Community and Junior College in Mississippi to offer swimming as a sport.
MCC's new swimming team will begin in the fall of 2023 and be led by head coach Wade Heggie. Wade brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the college. Heggie has been involved in competitive swimming for over 25 years and has trained and coached swimmers at all levels, from beginners to collegiate hopefuls. He is excited to bring his expertise to MCC and help build a strong swimming program. With Wade Heggie at the helm of the new swimming program at Meridian Community College, students can expect top-notch coaching and support as they pursue their athletic and academic goals. His experience and dedication to the sport make him an ideal fit to lead MCC's new swimming team to success in the NJCAA. Wade said, "I'm looking forward to this and I can't wait to get my feet wet. I'm ready to get on the phone and start the recruiting process."
Adding swimming as a sport is part of MCC's ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for students to participate in athletics and promote physical fitness. Swimming is a highly competitive and demanding sport that requires discipline, hard work, and dedication, aligning with MCC's values and mission.
"We are thrilled to be able to offer swimming to our students," said MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner. "Swimming is a great sport that teaches valuable life skills, including discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. We are confident that our new program will attract talented student-athletes who excel both in the pool and the classroom."
The new swimming program will offer a variety of events, including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly. It will compete against other National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) teams. The team will train in MCC's state-of-the-art Fitness Center, which features a six-lane, 25-meter indoor pool.
MCC's new swimming program is an exciting development for the college and the community. We look forward to seeing our swimmers dive into success both in and out of the pool.
