
MERIDIAN, Miss. – Seven Meridian Community College student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding academic and athletic achievements at the College's 2025 Awards Night, held April 28 in the McCain Theater. The annual ceremony highlights students across campus for excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and performance — with these sophomore athletes standing out among MCC's best and brightest.
Rosina Burford, a dedicated student and women's soccer player, received the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Courtyard of Scholars Award, recognizing academic excellence and leadership as a PTK scholar.
Tafadzwa Chikomba, a member of the men's track and field team, was named Male Athlete of the Year, honoring his dedication and excellence on the track.
Holly Gillies, from the women's soccer team, earned two significant honors: Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and selection to the All-Mississippi Community College Academic Team Transfer Pathway Scholar - Second Team.
Megan Heggie, a standout on the swimming and diving team, was recognized as the Female Athlete of the Year for her outstanding performance in and out of the pool.
Katie Hayes, also from the women's soccer team, was one of the evening's most decorated honorees. She received the Sue Key Excellence in Mathematics Award, was named to the All-Mississippi Community College Academic Team Transfer Pathway Scholar - Second Team, and concluded the evening by receiving the Ivy Outstanding Student Award—presented by MCC President Dr. Tom Huebner.
Bruce McClung, representing the MCC golf team, received both the Robert Cochran Memorial Scholarship and the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, demonstrating his academic strength alongside his athletic accomplishments.
Alexa Shirley, another women's soccer standout, was awarded the Wilton (Bill) Johnson Memorial Scholarship, which honors both academic promise and community impact.
All of these student-athletes are graduating sophomores who have represented MCC with distinction in the classroom, in competition, and across campus.
"We're proud of how these student-athletes have embodied what it means to be an Eagle—competitive, committed, and compassionate," said Sander Atkinson, MCC Athletic Director. "They've made an impact here, and I know they'll continue to soar wherever they go next."
