
MERIDIAN, Miss - The Meridian Community College Eagles baseball team delivered an impressive sweep over Danville Area Community College this weekend, securing four straight victories at Scaggs Field. Strong pitching performances and timely hitting propelled the Eagles to success in the series, further solidifying their momentum early in the season.
Game 1: Fowler's Commanding Start Sets Tone for Series
The Eagles opened the series with a 4-2 victory, led by sophomore Peyton Fowler's dominant outing on the mound. Fowler struck out eight batters, keeping the Jaguars off balance throughout his start. MCC's offense came alive in the sixth inning, pushing across three runs to take the lead for good.
Game 2: Blackwell Fans 11 in Shutout Performance
On Saturday afternoon, left-handed pitcher Cole Blackwell took control, striking out 11 batters and allowing just two hits over five and two-thirds shutout innings in MCC's 4-0 victory. The Eagles capitalized early, plating a run in the first inning on a groundout by Brayden Martin. Nate Trochessett extended the lead in the third with an RBI single, while Brett Busbea provided insurance in the fifth with a towering home run to left field.
The Eagles' bats stayed hot, collecting 11 hits in the game. Busbea, Trochessett, and Doby Bartling led the charge with two hits apiece. Corbin Gillentine closed the door with a strong relief outing, striking out three in one and one-third scoreless innings.
Game 3: Voyles' Grand Slam Powers Offensive Explosion
MCC dominated Sunday's opener with a commanding 13-0 win, fueled by Logan Voyles' grand slam in the sixth inning. The Eagles broke the game open in the fifth, scoring seven runs behind a series of clutch at-bats, including a bases-clearing double from Hampton Ross.
Pitching remained a strength for the Eagles, with Conner Gehr earning the win after tossing five shutout innings, striking out seven. The offense backed him up with nine hits, with Voyles and Ross combining for eight RBIs. Defensively, MCC was flawless, not committing a single error.
Game 4: Walk-Off Thriller Caps Perfect Weekend
The Eagles closed out the series in dramatic fashion, earning a 4-3 walk-off victory in extra innings. With the game tied at three in the bottom of the eighth, Dowe McGowan delivered the clutch hit, driving in the winning run to complete the sweep.
Brayden Martin was unstoppable at the plate, going a perfect 5-for-5 with key hits throughout the game. Hunter Parker was stellar in relief, striking out five over three scoreless innings to secure the win. MCC's defense remained locked in, committing zero errors for the second straight game.
Eagles Continue Strong Start to the Season
With the weekend sweep, Meridian improves its record to 7-1 and builds momentum heading into the next stretch of the season. The Eagles showcased dominance on the mound, patience at the plate, and strong fundamentals in the field.
MCC will be back in action on Wednesday, February 12, hosting Florida Post Grad at Scaggs Field in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
