
Meridian, MS - The Meridian Community College Men's basketball team is looking for a breakout season in 2019-2020 after finishing 8-14 last season. The Eagles have 5 returning sophomores who played significant minutes last season along with 6 exciting new freshman to help lead the Eagles. Head coach James Green said " We are excited about how our guys have been working in all areas of the game. Our sophomores should have a better understanding of what we want to do both offensively and defensively." " We have been going at each other pretty hard in the pre-season and it will be good to finally get to play another team this Friday when we open up."
Looking to lead the Eagles this season will be Green's 5 returning sophomores, Alverez Powell, Iverson Smith, Keyontae Trotter, Talvyn Dean, and Tyler Williams.
Alvarez Powell a 6'4: guard from Senatobia High School averaged 10 points and 2 assists last season while shooting 37% from behind the arc. Iverson Smith, a 6"0" guard from Ripley High School, also averaged 10 points per game and doled out 3 assists a game, while shooting an impressive 52% from 3.
Last year Keontae Trotter, a 6'1" guard from Jackson, MS, Talvyn Dean, a 6'0" guard from Senatobia and Tyler Williams, a 6'7" forward from Cleveland, MS, came off the bench to provide a spark for Green's team, but this season, they look to have a more significant role.
Incoming freshman for James Green's squad are Lorenzo Waddy, a 6'7" forward and Joshua Lewis, a 6'0" guard both from Houston, TX, Justin Brown, a 6'0" guard from Cumming, Ga, Darryl Jordan, a 6'7" forward from Hattiesburg, MS, Jayden Drummond, a 6'7" forward from Gulfport, MS, and Tyron Moore a 6'5" forward from Vicksburg, MS.
The Eagles will open their portion of the Schedule Friday November 1, 2019, at home, in the Graham Gymnasium against Blessed INJ Prep school at 6:00pm. They will be back in action at home with the Lady Eagles Monday November 4, 2019, against East Mississippi Community College. Coach Green said, "I'm glad we get to start the season with 2 home games this year and I look forward to having our home fans and community there to support us. It means a lot to the players and the coaches when the community shows up to support you."
