Eagles Sweep past Bishop State

Meridian - It was a clean sweep for the men's and women's basketball teams Monday night versus Bishop State Community College. The lady Eagles(1-2) got things started with a 74-61 win over the visiting lady Wildcats, and the Eagles(2-2) followed suit with a 72-69 victory of their own.


The Lady Eagles got off to a slow start against the visiting lady wildcats going into halftime trailing 34-39. In the third quarter, both teams would get hot, combining for seven 3-point baskets. This hot shooting would propel the lady Eagles to a 57-55 lead after 3. The lady Eagles would extend that lead through the fourth quarter coming away with the 13 point victory. Freshman, Sidney Simms was the story for the lady eagles tonight with 21 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists, and 1 blocked shot. Simms wasn't alone in the offensive category; Mia Moore had16 points and 5 rebounds, and Berniya Hardin added 14 points.

The Eagles scored first and took a ten-point lead into half time, 43-33. The Wildcats came firing back to start the second half, quickly eliminating the ten-point deficit. Only six and a half minutes in the Wildcats hit a 3-point basket and took their first lead of the game, 51-49. Bishop State would hold that lead until Keontae Trotter hit his only 3 pointer of the game with 8:40 left to play. The Eagles wouldn't relinquish their lead again. Freshman Justin Brown led the Eagles to their 3 point victory with 17 points. Darryl Jordan had 14 points, and 10 rebounds, and both Robert Bell and Alvarez Powell chipped in 10 points.

The Eagles are back in action Wednesday, November 13, 2019, as the host Royal Ambassadors Prep School at 6:30 pm.
