MCC Splits Doubleheader with Kirkwood Community College; Walk-Off Win Highlights Game Two

MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College softball team bounced back in thrilling fashion on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with Kirkwood Community College. After falling 8-0 in the first game, the Eagles responded with a dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory in game two.

Game One: Slow Start Stalls Eagles in Opener

A tough first inning put MCC in an early hole in game one, as Kirkwood took advantage of early opportunities to secure an 8-0 win.

Marlee McCalister provided a solid relief effort in the circle, throwing five and two-thirds innings and recording four strikeouts. At the plate, MCC saw hits from McCalister, Camry Johnson, and Allie Loftin. Defensively, the Eagles turned a double play in the game.

Game Two: Briggs Sparks MCC to Walk-Off Win

MCC showed resilience in game two, rallying for a dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory. Lainey Briggs delivered the game-winning moment in the bottom of the seventh, singling to drive in the winning run and cap off a dominant performance at the plate.

Briggs powered the MCC offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run home run in the third inning. Arlee McClellan also contributed offensively with two hits, while Paige Berry showcased patience at the plate with two walks.

The Eagles' pitching staff kept the game within reach, with Hannah Capello delivering four strong innings to start, followed by clutch relief performances from Mary Coumbe, Julie Amacher, and Sarah Watson. Watson earned the win, shutting down Kirkwood in the final frame to set up the walk-off finish.

MCC's defense was stellar throughout the game, playing error-free softball and making key plays in the field. Loftin led the way with seven defensive putouts.
