MCC Women’s Tennis Advances in Singles, Consolation Brackets on Day 2 at NJCAA National Tournament

TYLER, Texas – Meridian Community College's women's tennis team continued competition Sunday in the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Tournament, with multiple players advancing to quarterfinal rounds and the team holding strong at 15th place overall with 11 points.

Freshman Aleah McMullan delivered a thrilling three-set win in Flight 6 Singles, battling back after dropping the first set 6-3 to take the next two sets 6-3 and 7-6 over Weatherford College's Annabella Sanchez. McMullan now advances to the Quarterfinal round on Monday, May 5, where she will face second-seeded Anna Schmidt of St. Petersburg College.

In the consolation bracket, MCC saw two more victories in singles play:

  • Daisi Kukuljan (Flight 3 Singles) advanced to the Consolation Quarterfinal and will meet Mesa Community College's Sienna Buttafuoco on Monday.

  • Lilly Hollingsworth (Flight 4 Singles) also moved forward to the Consolation Quarterfinal, where she will face Salalee Seejong of Barton County Community College.

In Flight 1 Doubles, the pairing of Reine Akombo and Daisi Kukuljan secured their spot in the Consolation Quarterfinal, set to compete against Northwest Mississippi's Macarena Arisio and Claudia Lopez Chaparro on Monday.

Despite hard-fought efforts, MCC saw the end of the tournament for several other players:

  • Cheludo Monnayoo (Flight 1 Singles) fell to the top seed, Catherine Goldman of Hillsborough CC, concluding her run in the main draw.

  • Elizabeth Shirley (Flight 5 Singles) was eliminated after a second-round loss to No. 3 seed Chiho Takada from Cowley College.

  • The doubles teams of Monnayoo/Hollingsworth (Flight 2) and Alexander/McMullan (Flight 3) both exited the tournament after facing nationally ranked opponents in Sunday's action.

With competition heating up heading into Day 3, MCC still have multiple chances to earn valuable points in both the main and consolation brackets.
