NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Meridian Community College's track and field team made a statement at the Music City Challenge in Nashville, as two Eagles etched their names in the record books with historic performances. Sophomore Tafadzwa Chikomba and freshman Nhamoinesu Mabvuka each set new MCC records while competing against elite NCAA Division I competition.
Chikomba, representing MCC's 15th-ranked men's track and field team, delivered a career-defining moment in the Men's Long Jump Invite, soaring to a distance of 8.05 meters (26.41 feet). His record-breaking mark not only secured first place in the event but also placed him third among all collegiate long jumpers and third all-time in NJCAA history.
On the distance side, Mabvuka turned in a stellar performance in the 5000-meter race, clocking a time of 16:54.32. Her impressive effort earned her eighth place overall against NCAA Division I competitors and secured the second-fastest 5000-meter time in NJCAA indoor competition this season, further solidifying her as one of the top distance runners in the nation.
Both athletes hail from Zimbabwe, with Chikomba continuing to build on his standout sophomore campaign and Mabvuka making an immediate impact in her freshman season.
MCC's track and field team will look to carry this momentum into their next competition at the LSU Twilight in Baton Rouge, La., on Friday, February 21.
